Generally cupping is combined with acupuncture in one treatment, but it can also be used alone.  At Five Elements Acupuncture we use sliding cupping that feels very much like a remedial massage, but with added benefits, such as clearing congestion from the lungs and calming the nervous system.
Oil is applied to the skin first; the air in the cups is then quickly warmed and the cups are placed on the skin, creating a vacuum. The cups are then gently moved across the skin.
The vacuum within the cups can be gentle or firm, depending on personal preference, and the treatment can be particularly soothing to stiff, aching muscles.
